5- Samsung Notebook Odyssey (15.6-inch)

The number five of our top 5 Laptops is Samsung Notebook Odyssey! Samsung Notebook Odyssey ($1,199.99 to start; $1,399.99 as tested). It's outfitted with a powerful Intel Core i7 processor and Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 GPU to try to take on the big names like Asus and Lenovo.

But the Odyssey doesn't make a good first impression, thanks to its cheap looks and build, and the lackluster screen doesn't do it any favors. It has decent performance, but you can do better at this price or less.

Samsung Notebook Odyssey Design:

The plastic feels like something you'd find on a cheap toy, not a $1,200 gaming machine. It's not much better once you lift the lid. First, you'll find the 15.6-inch, 1080p display and a full, red backlit keyboard with number pad, which all seems completely normal.

But then you get to the trackpad. It's surrounded by a plastic rhombus cutout with red on both ends. It's ugly, and even worse, misleading, as it doesn't do anything (more on this below). It's not all horrible, though. I do appreciate the use of rounded edges, especially when so many gaming laptops use jagged lines to prove they're tough.

The "Hexaflow" vents on the bottom of the machine do admittedly look cool, but you'll rarely see them. Those refinements don't get me past the fact that this is the chassis looks like something straight out of Hot Topic. On the left side of the laptop, you'll find the power port, Ethernet jack, an HDMI port, a USB 3.0 port and a headphone jack.

On the right side, are an SD card slot, a pair of USB 2.0 ports and a Kensington lock slot. Those USB ports aren't labeled, though, so I'm admittedly taking Samsung's word for it. I had to guess which one was the USB 3.0 port and email the company to get a conclusive answer.

Samsung Notebook Odyssey Display: Turn Up the Brightness

The 15.6-inch, 1080p screen on the Odyssey is sharp, but dim on anything but its brightest settings. When I watched the trailer for Spider-Man: Homecoming, I found the colors were a bit too warm, and Spider-Man's suit occasionally looked a bit orange. The picture is sharp, though, and I could easily make out the subtle webbing pattern in Spidey's costume.

The Odyssey covers 77 percent of the sRGB color gamut, which is less than the mainstream-notebook average of 94 percent. The Lenovo Legion (68 percent) and the Dell 15 7000 Inspiron (67 percent) did worse, while the Asus Strix reproduced even more color at an excellent 122 percent.

The panel on the Samsung registered a very good Delta-E color accuracy score of 0.2 (0 is ideal). That's the same as the Legion, and lower than the average of 2.3. As I've stated, you'll want to turn up the brightness, as the Odyssey measured an average 246 nits, falling short of the 276-nit average. The Legion (220 nits) was even dimmer than the Odyssey, while the Inspiron (253 nits) and Strix (269 nits) were brighter.

4- Lenovo Legion Y720

Lenovo has never been a big name in gaming, but it's keen to change this with its new range of 'Legion' gaming laptops. The top-of-the-range model is the Legion Y720, which will go on sale from April for $1,899 in the US. UK and European pricing is still to be confirmed.

Lenovo Legion Y720 Hardware Configuration

A major part of this Lenovo Legion Y720 laptop review is the analysis of its core hardware features. First of all, it must be made clear that the Lenovo Legion Y720 is a performance oriented laptop. It can do things that you would expect a workstation to do. It also comes with a great built-quality, designed to last for a very long time. You also get an amazing heat dissipation system that makes sure the laptop stay cool all the time. Basically, you can do just about anything on this laptop.

Processor

The processor is the most important part of any computer. It determines how well the laptop will perform. The Lenovo Legion Y720 comes with the latest 7thgeneration Kaby Lake Intel Core i7-7700HQ quad-core processor. This is a high-end processor with a base speed of 2.8 Ghz. Just like all intel processors, this processor also has a turbo boost feature that takes the speeds up to a whopping 3.8 GHz per core. This means you can do a hell lot with this laptop!

The Core i7-7700HQ processor literally obliterated its core i3 and i5 subordinates. It also outperforms the previous generation HQ processors by a considerable margin. The only processors better than the 7700HQ are 7820HQ and 7920HQ. These, however, are a rarity due to their expensive price.

So what is this processor useful for? Just about everything actually. You can expect to do almost anything with a core i7-7700HQ processor. You can play the latest games, work on your designs, edit photos, and encode videos without breaking a sweat.

So if you want to do every day work along with heavy processing without any the hassle, then the Core i7-7700HQ is your go-to processor.

With an expected price point of under $1500, the Lenovo Legion Y720 is a great laptop to have with such a nice and powerful processor.

Screen

Just like most sub-$1500 laptops, one of the positive aspects of this laptop is the 15.6-inch display. Although it’s not 4k, the FHD resolution is perfectly suitable for the laptop’s screen real-estate. The panel being utilized by the Lenovo Legion Y720 is a well-lit IPS panel, providing viewing angles up to 178 degrees.

All in all, the screen on the Legion Y720 laptop is worthy of its name and great for gaming at any time.

RAM

In reality, 8Gb of RAM is more than enough for any gaming-related use. However, the Legion Y20 laptop comes with a double of that. 16GB of RAM makes sure you can perform heavy tasks like image editing and video encoding. More also means much better multitasking experience.

Graphics

As is evident in all laptops in this price category, you get the much coveted though mid-tier GTX 1060 GPU with this laptop. Although the GTX 1060 is much powerful than the previous generation 980M flagship GPU, it is inferior to the GTX 1070. Nevertheless, you can expect to do great gaming with the GTX 1060. You can properly utilize its VR capabilities through Lenovo’s Entertainment Hub that up-scales everything for VR.

Sound

Audio is where the Lenovo Legion Y720 outshines and outperforms its competition. With the Y70, you get the industry’s first ever laptop with Dolby Atmos sound system. By connecting your headphones, you can enjoy sound that will make you feel like you are inside the action. It’s truly a remarkable experience. Apart from that, you get 4 speakers and built-in subwoofer, powered by JBL. This kind of setup and quality guarantees a fuller sound, without the need of external speakers.

Keyboard

3- [Dell] Alienware 17 R4

Alienware's 2017 offerings keep their classic, angular spaceship cases from last year, but much has changed on the inside. The Alienware 17 R4 (starting at $1,299; tested at $1,949 and $2,599) now packs a 7th-generation "Kaby Lake" Intel CPU and Nvidia GTX 1070 or 1080 GPUs that are perfect for virtual reality. The laptop also has Tobii eye tracking to play games with your peepers. If you can spend the money on one of its more expensive configurations, the Alienware 17 is the 17-inch mobile gaming rig to beat.

Dell Alienware 17 R4 Design:

Alienware's trademark angular design is on full display with this 17-inch gaming laptop. The gunmetal-gray spaceship look hasn't changed much in the past few years: It's still aggressive and powerful, with its angles and two-toned mix of gray and black, but it's also classy and refined, with solid aluminum construction and soft-touch plastic. Still, the look is starting to get a bit tired after so many years.

At 9.6 pounds and 16.7 x 13.1 x 1.2 inches, the Alienware is slightly thicker than its competitors, and heavier than most. The Aorus X7 v6 is a sleek 16.1 x 12.2 x 1 inches and just 7.2 pounds, and the 15-inch MSI GT62 Dominator Pro is unsurprisingly smaller, at 6.4 pounds and 15.4 x 10.5 x 1.6 inches. Razer's Blade Pro is 7.8 pounds and a slighter 16.7 x 11 x 0.8 inches. Only the Asus ROG G752VS OC Edition is heavier, at a full 10 pounds, but it's similar in size, at 16.4 x 12.7 x 1.9 inches.

The laptop is literally surrounded by ports, so there's plenty of room for expansion. On the right side, there's a single USB 3.0 port and some vents, while the left side is home to a Noble lock slot, a USB Type-C port, a USB 3.0 port, a microphone and headphone jacks.

There's even more on the back: an Ethernet jack, a mini DisplayPort, HDMI output, a Thunderbolt 3 port, the power jack and a connection for the Alienware Graphics Amp, which lets you attach an external desktop GPU for 4K gaming and VR.

Dell Alienware 17 R4 Specs and Performance

The Alienware 17 R4 runs Windows 10 on Intel 6th generation Skylake CPUs, which is the latest version available in a quad core mobile CPU as of this writing. It surely will get the very, very minor performance bump with Intel 7th generation Kaby Lake CPUs in the first half of 2017, but I wouldn't hold off a purchase if you want a laptop now given the tiny performance jump. These are 45 watt CPUs, and you can get it with the 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7-6700HQ or the 2.7 GHz Core i7-6820HK overclockable CPU.

The notebook ships with the new and much faster NVIDIA GeForce 10 series graphics, in your choice of GTX 1060, GTX 1070 (our review unit) and the top of the line GTX 1080 GPU. Most configurations ship with 16 gigs of DDR4 RAM (32 gigs is max), a boot PCIe SSD and a 1TB 7200 RPM HDD. The laptop has a 17.3" display available in 1080p, QHD and 4K resolutions. Alienware's zone backlit keyboard with side, lid and front logo backlighting is standard (you can turn it off at the office). While many manufacturers have conceded battery life to performance and simpler designs, Alienware still offers NVIDIA Optimus switchable graphics on the 1080p IPS and 4K IGZO models for better battery life when not gaming.

There's a hardware switch on the Fn row if you wish to set the machine to always run on dedicated graphics, which is a nice touch (MSI used to offer this, but has dropped it from this year's competing GT72VR Dominator Pro, while leaving it on the higher end GT73). There are two battery options, a 68 Whr battery and the 99 Whr battery in our model. We recommend the $50 higher capacity battery option unless weight is a consideration, though what's 6 ounces when you're already pondering a 10 lb. portable.

The Alienware is available with a variety of matte, non-touch displays: our full HD IPS 300 nit 60Hz display (overclockable), a full HD 120Hz G-Sync TN panel with 400 nits brightness and TN's faster refresh rates (at the expense of weaker viewing angles and contrast) and a 4K Sharp IGZO display with 300 nit brightness.

Gamers will likely go for the full HD option (either IPS or TN depending on how hardcore you are about refresh rates and G-Sync) and photo and video editors will gravitate to the 4K display. Alienware computers were once famously expensive, but Dell has done a good job of keeping the price in check: the Alienware 17 R4 starts at $1,500, and our review unit with GTX 1070, 16 gigs of DDR4 2400 MHz RAM and a boot 128 gig SSD with 1TB HDD and IPS 1080p display sells for $1,650 to $1,800 depending on sale prices.

2- Razer Blade Pro

The new Razer Blade Pro is unequivocally the most powerful laptop the company has ever built, and one of the first notebooks we've seen that can consistently play modern 4K games on high graphics settings and 32GB RAM it's so Amazing!

However, with a price of $3,700, £3,500 in the UK and a converted price of approximately AU$4,800 in Australia, this is one expensive tool. Between the performance, features and slim design, it doesn't feel overpriced.Since it doesn't necessarily look like a typical gaming laptop either, it would be a fine choice for graphics pros or photo/video editors.

Plus, for people still mourning the loss of Apple's 17-inch MacBook Pro, it is as elegant as any Apple laptop. That said, if you were hoping to save some money by going with a lower-end configuration, you're out of luck. In fact, the only thing you can change is the storage capacity and that only increases the price.

There are no options to drop down to a less-powerful graphics card or switch to a full HD matte display like the company's 14-inch Blade laptop -- what you see is what you get. On the upside, what you're getting is pretty great.

Razer Blade Pro Design: Built for gamers

The keyboard, for example, uses ultra-low-profile mechanical switches -- a world's first according to Razer -- which gives you the clicky response of a full-size gaming keyboard in a mobile design. The keys might require a bit more force than your typical laptop keyboard, they're noticeably loud, and the keys felt ever-so-slightly smaller, but after some adjustment I did enjoy using it.

Every time I think I'm over Razer's design, the company does something like this. It's not that the Blade Pro is a grand departure from prior Razer laptops. On the contrary, it looks just like the Blade and Blade Stealth -- just bigger.

The entire frame is still made of that inky-black CNC aluminum that I've come to know and love. The lid is still defined by the emerald-green tri-snake emblem sandwiched between two subtle ridges. Yeah, it's the essentially the same laptop, except this bad boy has an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 CPU cleverly smuggled into its slim frame.

But just how slim is the Blade Pro? Weighing 7.8 pounds and measuring 16.7 x 11 x 0.88 inches, the Blade Pro is one of the slimmest, lightest desktop replacements on the market. It makes the Asus ROG G701V (8.2 pounds, 16.1 x 12.2 x 1.5 inches) look massive, and the MSI GT83VR Titan SLI (11.6 pounds, 18 x 13.3 x 1.7~2.7 inches) and Origin Eon17-SLX 10 Series (12.8 pounds, 18 x 13.3 x 1.7~2.7 inches) seem gigantic. The 7.2-pound, 16.1 x 12.2 x 1-inch Aorus X7 v6 is lighter but nowhere near as thin.

Razer Blade Pro Specs and Performance

For years, Razer's "Blade Pro" lingered in obsolescence, two full generations behind the bleeding-edge processors and graphics technology the company put in its other laptops. Not anymore. With a 2.6GHz Intel Core i7-6700HQ CPU beating at its heart, 32GB of RAM and NVIDIA's latest GTX 1080 GPU, the new Razer Blade Pro absolutely lives up to its moniker. This is the most powerful laptop Razer has ever built and the first gaming laptop to cross my desk that can run circles around my game library at ultra-high resolutions.

The system performed admirably on our synthetic benchmarks, notching 13,406 on Geekbench 3, which measures overall performance. That score wasn't enough, however, to match the 17,348 desktop-replacement average. Outfitted with a 4.5-GHz Intel Core i7-6700K CPU, the Eon17-SLX delivered a whopping 19,929, while the 2.7-GHz Intel Core i7-6820HK-powered G701V, X7 v6 and Titan SLI achieved 16,120; 16,411; and 14,765, respectively.

Keep in mind, though, that the competing rigs are utilizing overclockable processors. On our File Transfer test, the Blade Pro's pair of 256GB M.2 PCIe solid-state drives in RAID 0 configuration duplicated 4.97GB in 13 seconds, for a transfer rate of 391.2 megabytes per second, missing the 540-MBps category average. The Eon17-SLX (dual 265GB NVMe M.2 PCIe SSD) achieved 424.1 MBps.

The G701V and the Titan SLI, with their pair of 512GB PCIe SSDs, notched 636.2 MBps and 727 MBps, respectively, while the G752VS' single 256GB M.2 SSD managed to hit 848.2 MBps. When we ran the OpenOffice Spreadsheet Macro test, the Blade Pro matched 20,000 names and addresses in 4 minutes and 6 seconds, which is slower than the 3:35 average. The Titan SLI and G752VS were neck and neck, at 3:26 and 3:23, while the Eon17-SLX pulled out the win with a time of 3:09.

Razer Blade Pro Display

The Blade Pro's 4K (3840 x 2160) touch display is captivating, thanks to its dramatic hues and fine detail. When I watched the 4K movie Tears of Steel, I could see the fine scratches and pockmarks in the paint on a forest-green bridge. The neon-blue and pink accents in the actress's clothing popped against the blue sky and green leaves in the backdrop.

This year, though, the Blade has earned a new adjective: necessary. The Razer Blade Pro is the first gaming laptop I've ever used that isn't hamstrung by an ultra-high resolution panel. This machine is actually powerful enough to play modern games in 4K.

1- Asus Rog Strix gL502

Oh yes the Asus Rog Strix gL502 is the best laptop for 2017 like to their price and their performance. The Asus Rog Stric gL502 packs the latest 6th gen Intel® processor and NVIDIA GeForce GTX graphics in a compact and lightweight design. Strix GL502 enables users to enjoy high-end gaming from anywhere.

Asus Rog Strix gL502 Design:

Asus has slowly been edging its way away from the done-to-death black and red color scheme found on most gaming laptops. Instead of crimson highlights, the GL502 has orange trim accenting its black paint job. It's not a grand departure like the titanium and copper design found on the Asus ROG GX700 and ROG G752, but it's a start.

Though, we almost wish Asus would have stuck to the purely black and red motif, as the keyboard backlighting is still red. Aside from the new paintjob, Asus has seriously upped the profile of this machine with a new look that's in line with the rest of its ROG series.

Whereas the Asus ROG G501 closely copied the MacBook Pro look, the GL502 stands on its own with an attractive and aggressive design. Brushed aluminum screen lids are fairly common on gaming laptops, and so, you'll also find one on this Strix machine. But, the GL502 also features an extra flat edge stamped with the Republic of Gamers tagline.

The rest of the chassis is made out of plastic, which might seem disappointing at first, but it feels solid as any full-metal gaming laptop. What's more, Asus has given the keyboard deck a similar brushed finish to its top lid, while the underside carries a mechanical design etched into the panel.

There's a load of branding here, between the Strix logo cut into the keyboard deck and Republic of Gamers featured prominently on the top and bottom of the laptop, but you can't deny that there isn't a single boring side to this 15-inch beauty. Beyond looks, the Strix's largely plastic exterior also helps keep weight down to a mere 4.9-pounds (2.22kg).

To put that in perspective, it's more than a half pound heavier than the Razer Blade and MSI GS60 Ghost Pro but the Strix features higher-spec parts. Still there are heavier 15-inch laptops like the Alienware 15 and the 5.29-pounds (2.4kg) Gigabyte P35X v5. It's also isn't the world's thinnest gaming laptop measuring in at 15.35 x 10.47 x 1.2 inches (38.99 x 26.59 x 2.34 cm; W x D x H) – 0.3-inches thicker than its Maxwell-powered predecessor – but this is largely to make room for a much more efficient cooling system.

Asus Rog Strix gL502 Specs and Performance:

We're all just biding our time until Intel's new Kaby Lake processors come to market. Until then, the Strix's 2.6-GHz Intel Core i7-6700HQ processor with 16GB will do. The laptop streamed an episode of Gotham at full screen while running a full-system scan with 12 additional open tabs in Google Chrome, and it showed no latency.

However, the Strix fell short on the Geekbench 3 test, scoring 12,371, which was enough to top the 7,780 category average. Thanks to their own Core i7-6700HQ CPUs, the Dominator Pro and P55W hit 13,556 and 13,530.

It took 12 seconds for the Strix's 256GB NVMe PCIe SSD to duplicate 4.97GB of mixed-media files during our File Transfer Test, which translates to 424.1 megabytes per second. That was more than enough to decimate the 135.9MBps mainstream average and the P55W's (128GB m.2 PCIe SSD) 128.1MBps, but not the Dominator Pro (256GB m.2 PCIe SSD), which delivered a blistering 628.6MBps.

Asus Rog Strix gL502 Display:

If you're looking for bold, vibrant color, the Strix's 15.6-inch, 1920 x 1080 display has you covered. Despite, the screen' matte, anti-glare coating, actress Octavia Spencer's cocoa skin looked radiant during the Hidden Figures trailer. Her olive dress popped against the otherwise-drab background. Details were fine enough that I could make out the divots in a golden pin the actress wore.

The Strix is outfitted with an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 GPU with 8GB VRAM. The middle child of Nvidia's new Pascal chips, this GPU offers approximately 35 percent better performance than its predecessor. And just like its 10-series siblings, it has the extra bonus of being VR-capable.

When we ran the SteamVR performance benchmark to check the VR-readiness, it hit 10.6, edging out the mainstream average and the Dominator Pro (GTX 1070 GPU), which hit 10.1. The P55W, with its GTX 1060 GPU, notched only 6.6.
