Dji Tello Review - What is the Differences

DJI & Ryze have decided to enter the lower cost brushless quadcopter market with Tello. The $99 Tello is a tiny machine with a camera that can capture 360-degree video and stream live footage to a tablet, or to an unspecified selection of third-party VR headsets.

It’s aimed at a young audience, and Ryze promises features that will make it safe and easy to use, including automatic takeoff and landing. It says these features are possible because of an Intel vision processing chip and flight stabilization from DJI — a company known for larger and more expensive drones.

While it may not have GPS and the advanced flight modes you’ve come to expect from a DJI drone, it does, in fact, have quite a few interesting features. Right away it becomes one of the most advanced brushed quadcopters you can buy with a 14-core Intel processor.

Dji Tello Specs

  • Smart Interactive Drone
  • 720p Videos
  • 5MP Photos
  • Takeoff and Landing from Your Hand
  • Intel Processor
  • Programmable via Scratch SDK
  • Free Tello App with User-Friendly UI
  • Compatible with Bluetooth Controllers
  • Dji Tello Range: Operating range is a bit more down to Earth but it’s still a great number considering both the price and size of Tello. If you are intending to buy this little bugger, you will have to be satisfied with roughly 100 meters of operating range.

So, to summarize, the Dji Ryze Tello has collision detection system. It also hovers in place when your hands leave the controls. It also comes with Auto Takeoff, Auto Landing, and Low Battery protection features. This is made possible with a combination of Intel’s Movidius vision processing unit (VPU) and DJI’s flight stabilization technology.

It has real-time HD video transmission to your smartphone or tablet. You can throw it to take off, it has a bunch of autonomous ‘EZ’ flight modes and it has flips pre-programmed.

So yes. For $99, this is a drone that can effectively “see” the world around it. This is a big step.

Dji Tello Battery & Range

The Dji Tello has a very impressive flight time of 13 minutes and uses two antennas for the best possible signal. You’ll get a range of up to 100 meters with the Tello. It can be controlled via a smartphone app or a compatible Bluetooth controller.

You can use the automatic takeoff for Ryze Tello or the Throw & Go launch where you toss it in the air and it takes off. It also has Bounce Mode where it will take off and land in the palm of your hand. Tello even has 8 preprogrammed flips that you can do with the press of a button.

The batteries are removable, have an 1100 mAh capacity and weigh just 26g!

Batteries can be charged using the Micro USB port on the Tello.

"We set out to build the most fun drone ever, and we came up with Tello: an impressive little drone for kids and adults that's a blast to fly and helps users learn about drones with coding education. Get yourself a Tello to find out just how awesome flying can be!" said Dji & Intel.

The idea of making play an essential part of learning and putting this concept into a drone makes the Tello more than just a toy. It’s an opportunity for kids and young engineers to discover the ingenuity and science behind the aerial technology. Once they learn how it works, they will be able to do great things with it. We’re excited to see the Tello come to life and congratulate Ryze for their accomplishment,” said Paul Xu, DJI’s Vice President.

Dji Tello Camera Features

The Ryze Tello has a built-in camera and high-quality image processor. This lets you capture both images and video. Tello's "EZ Shots" functions, including Circle, 360, and Up & Away will create amazing visual sequences for you at the tap of a button.

You can then share what you've captured straight from the app to social media platforms. The camera has a 5MP camera, which can capture 5pm stills and 720p video.

The included Intel processor means that images and video are processed quickly and effectively. The Tello also has electronic image stabilization to help capture smooth, clear images every time, even in tricky conditions.

Dji Tello Drone - Controller

The Tello drone allows you to control it with an apple compatible game controller - which I happen to have thanks to my passion for Geometry Wars. Setting a game controller up with the RYZE Tello is really easy. I'm using a SteelSeries Nimbus, but if you're on a budget - you could try the SteelSeries Stratus. The nimbus works with iOS and Apple TV, while the stratus works with iOS devices.

Dji Tello Drone - Easy and Safe to use

Designed with beginners in mind the Tello Drone combines durability with a lightweight, easy to use design. The combination of hardware/software protection built into the Tello will give you or for your kids, the confidence to fly with ease.

  • Auto Landing and Take Off-take off or land just by tapping the screen
  • Low Battery Level Protection - when your battery is getting low an alarm will sound
  • Connectivity Failsafe Protection - if you lose connection with your Tello it will land safely
  • Vision Positioning System – sensors enable you to achieve precise hovering.

Dji Tello Things

The Dji Tello will be compatible with select third party VR headsets. We’re guessing DJI Goggles will be at the front of this queue. The Tello has also been designed for educational purposes. It can be programmed with Scratch, an MIT Media Labs coding system that teaches kids and teens the basics of programming. More advanced users can also develop software applications for Tello using the Tello SDK.

Dji Tello
At 80 grams, the Dji Tello is definitely on the small side; DJI’s small-and-light Spark drone weighs closer to 300 grams. It flies for 13 minutes at a time, compared to the Spark’s 16 minutes, and takes 5-megapixel photos compared to the Spark’s 12-megapixel ones. But it’s a lot cheaper than the $499 Spark, too.

The Tello isn’t supposed to launch until March, but it’s debuting at CES this week and is available for pre-order now at Dji Store, so hopefully, we’ll be able to put its capabilities to the test.
